A 3D printer is a CNC robot. Like any machine with moving parts, motors, and heating elements, it requires regular maintenance. If your print quality has slowly degraded over time, you likely missed a maintenance step.
Here is the professional studio checklist we use at DesignMak:
Weekly Maintenance
- Clean the Build Plate: Wash with warm water and dish soap to remove invisible oils.
- Wipe the Rods: Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe dust off the smooth metal guide rods.
Monthly Maintenance
- Check Belt Tension: Pluck the rubber belts on your X and Y axes. They should feel tight and twang like a bass guitar string. Loose belts cause "layer shifting" and ghosting (echoes on the print surface).
- Lubricate Rods and Bearings: Apply a few drops of synthetic oil or lithium grease to the metal rods and lead screws. Run the axes back and forth to spread it evenly.
- Clean the Extruder Gears: Open the extruder flap and blow out the plastic dust that has accumulated on the gears. Clogged gears cause under-extrusion.
Semi-Annual Maintenance
- Change the Nozzle: Brass nozzles wear out over time, especially if you use glow-in-the-dark or matte filaments. A worn 0.4mm nozzle slowly becomes a sloppy 0.5mm nozzle.
- Check V-Roller Wheels: If your printer uses rubber wheels (like an Ender 3), check them for flat spots or heavy wear. Tighten the eccentric nuts so the bed doesn't wobble.
Take care of your machine, and it will output dimensionally accurate car parts for years to come!
