Creality Wiki Manual: How to Diagnose & Fix Filament Grinding, Extruder Gear Slips & Error FO0528

According to the official Creality General Documents for FFF Printers, one of the most persistent failure modes in direct-drive and Bowden extruders is filament grinding (gear chew-out), often triggering Creality OS warning codes like FO0528 (extruder printing without output) or FO2837 (feed path jam).

When abnormal mechanical resistance blocks filament travel, the hardened steel drive gear continues spinning against stationary plastic, carving a crescent-shaped pit into the strand. Once ground, teeth lose friction entirely, resulting in sudden extrusion stops mid-print.

Creality Extruder Gear and Feeding Diagnostics

The 4 Root Causes of Filament Grinding

  1. Hotend Heat Creep (Thermal Creep): If the heatsink cooling fan slows down or airflow is restricted, the melt zone creeps upward into the cold heatbreak. Filament softens prematurely before reaching the nozzle, swelling into an immovable plastic plug.
  2. Excessive Extruder Tension: Over-tightening the dual-drive tension spring crushes filament out-of-round, causing severe friction inside PTFE guide tubes.
  3. Rapid Retraction Cycles: Short, repetitive retractions over dense support lattices grind the exact same 10mm section of filament back and forth through the drive teeth until it snaps.
  4. Spool Tangling & Buffer Resistance: On multi-color units (such as Creality CFS or external spool holders), knotting or high spool hub friction forces the feeding motor into overload.

Creality Wiki Recovery Procedure

  1. Unload & Inspect: Release the extruder cam lever. Manually pull out the jammed filament.
  2. Cut Past the Damage: Inspect at least 2 meters of strand. Cut off the entire chewed/scratched section with flush cutters at a 45-degree angle.
  3. Clean the Drive Teeth: Chewed plastic dust packs into the knurled teeth of the dual-gear assembly, reducing gripping torque. Use a brass wire brush or compressed air to clean out all white polymer shavings.
  4. Verify Nozzle Temperature: Ensure you are not printing high-flow filaments below recommended melt temperatures. For Creality Hyper PLA, maintain 210 deg C to 220 deg C when exceeding 250 mm/s.

Common Creality OS Error Code Reference

  • FO0528: Toolhead active but no filament flow detected by the optical runout sensor.
  • FO2837 / FO2838: Filament jammed between the entry sensor and drive gears.
  • FM2857: CFS motor overload; check for knotting, tangled spool edges, or high friction in PTFE bends.
  • FB2844: Pneumatic fitting failure; PTFE guide tube dislodged under extrusion pressure.
