The Perfect First Layer: How to Fix Bed Adhesion Issues

3D Print Layer

90% of all 3D printing failures happen on the very first layer. If the plastic doesn't stick to the bed perfectly, your print will warp, detach, and turn into a giant ball of spaghetti.

Here is the professional checklist to guarantee perfect bed adhesion every time.

1. Clean the Bed (The Magic Trick)

You cannot see it, but the oils from your fingers act as a perfect anti-stick agent for plastics. Solution: Wash your build plate with warm water and standard dish soap (like Dawn/Fairy). Dry it with a clean paper towel. Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) is okay for quick wipes, but dish soap removes heavy oils best.

2. Adjust the Z-Offset (Squish)

The nozzle needs to be exactly the right distance from the bed.

  • Too High: The plastic roundly drops onto the bed and easily flakes off.
  • Too Low: The nozzle scrapes the bed, plastic is transparent, and the extruder clicks.
  • Perfect: The plastic line is slightly squished, flat on top, with no gaps between lines.

3. Bed Temperature

Ensure your bed is hot enough for the material:

  • PLA: 50°C - 60°C
  • PETG: 70°C - 80°C
  • ABS/ASA: 90°C - 110°C

4. Use Adhesives (If Necessary)

If you are printing large flat automotive parts (like a dashboard bezel) in ABS or PETG, warping forces are massive. Use Dimafix, Magigoo, or standard unscented hair spray/glue stick to give the bed an extra gripping layer. (Bonus: For PETG on glass, glue stick actually acts as a protective release layer so it doesn't shatter your glass!).
